The heart of the internet
Certain platforms let you receive alerts when your child gets direct messages from other players, allowing you to catch potential issues early. Knowing the ins and outs of the games your child plays gives you a clearer sense of the content, the people they’re interacting with, and potential risks. Most major gaming platforms have player and family or parental controls that make it easy to create and manage family accounts. When using EAâs online services, you can play, chat and, in some cases, share other content with players including friends. Los Angeles County filed a lawsuit against Roblox two days later, claiming the platform “makes children easy prey for pedophiles” and “fails to implement reasonable and readily available safety measures”. On December 18, 2025, the Attorney General of Tennessee Jonathan Skrmetti would sue Roblox for misleading parents about child safety, saying that “Roblox is the digital equivalent of a creepy cargo van lingering at the edge of a playground”.
From content filters to limiting chat options, parental controls give you more oversight on who your child can communicate with and what they can play. NetSmartz is NCMEC’s online safety education program. But thereâs still more to doâjoin us in protecting children and supporting our mission. On September 15, 2025, Oklahoma attorney general Gentner Drummond announced that he was seeking outside law firms to investigate Roblox over alleged child exploitation and safety failures.
And one cannot upsell content to players who have already left. Moderating images, voice, and video content in real time requires a different architecture than batch- or queue-based moderation systems. According to Apostolos Georgakis, our CTO at Besedo, real-time, AI-driven content moderation combined with strong policy enforcement is the robust solution online gaming desperately needs. The end goal isnât to play nanny or ruin the fun â itâs to cultivate communities where all players can have fun without fear of harassment.
The platform implemented a rehaul of its friend system with age verification through facial recognition or through a government-issued ID. Roblox Corporation has responded to some concerns by launching updates intended to boost child safety, and it employs about 3,000 moderators. Concerns include exposure to sexual content, sexual predation, political extremism, and financial exploitation, which have led to some countries banning the platform. We detect manipulative behaviors by perpetrators to exploit children, often through shared interests.
- Developers also claimed that the verification system could not be trusted in the sense of how they may collect and store users’ faces.
- That month, Iraq also banned the game, citing child safety and its incompatibility with “social values and traditions”.
- Roblox Corporation’s letter stated that the activities of Schlep and other vigilante streamers were a violation of the platform’s terms of service and created an unsafe environment for users.
- You can activate it today and start protecting your kidsâ online activities.
- The Netherlands and Belgium have restricted certain games on the platform due to their regulations on in-game “loot boxes”, which give out items based on random or unknown chances, to reduce children’s exposure to gambling.
- We’re passionate about making sure it’s a super safe environment for kids to play and enjoy themselves.
- Roblox Corporation responded to the lawsuit on August 15, stating that they continuously work “to enhance our moderation approaches to promote a safe and enjoyable environment for all users”.
Players demand action: Moderation is a must

- During the same period, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Oman banned access to the platform in the sultanate after multiple reports of inappropriate content being distributed by Roblox to minors.
- Conversely, players are willing to spend more in games that feel safe â one analysis found gamers spend 54% more on titles they perceive as ânon-toxicâ.
- Court documents show that the lawsuit was settled after Simon agreed to pay the Roblox Corporation $150,000 and a permanent ban from the game, notably not establishing a legal precedent for IP bans from the platform.
- According to the company in 2020, the monthly player base included half of all American children under the age of 16.
As of August 2025update, the corporation is facing several lawsuits in the United States for alleged failures to protect children. Poki Kids is an online playground specially created for young players. We guard against gamers attempting to move the conversation away from the protected gaming platform to discord or other messaging apps. âIf users have a bad experience, whether itâs harassment in a game, scams on a marketplace, or hate speech on a social platform, retention becomes nearly impossible.
Hindenburg Research cited a similar game, Public Bathroom Simulator Vibe, as one of the reasons Roblox is an “X-rated pedophile hellscape”. He stated in July 2025 that Roblox could serve as an effective online dating platform and that it could help lonely people meet in real life. Roblox has rejected claims made by these organizations, alleging that they were highlighting rare instances and that their promotion only served to further an agenda of causing others to sell stock. The developer would later be sentenced to 15 years in prison for paying an Uber driver to drive a 15-year-old child from Indiana to his home state of New Jersey for sex. Although his account was terminated, he transferred the game to a friend’s account and continued to make money from the game.
From February to May 2025, law firm Anapol Weiss filed four different lawsuits against Roblox on behalf of children for alleged exploitation by adults. The lawsuit alleges that Roblox connected their daughter with online predators, who sexually exploited her by coercing her to send sexually explicit photos to them on Discord and Snapchat; those corporations were also named in the lawsuit. Other federal governments, such as Coahuila and Nuevo LeĂłn, sent communications to parents stating that Roblox was being used to extort minors. In December 2025, access to Roblox was blocked in Russia due to it allegedly containing extremist material and “international LGBT propaganda”, with Roskomnadzor saying that the platform was “rife with inappropriate content that can negatively impact the spiritual and moral development of children”. In October 2025, the Attorney General’s Office in Lleida, Catalonia, Spain, launched a series of investigations following several reports from parents whose children had been harassed through Roblox. On February 3, the Egyptian government decided to completely ban the platform following a decision by the Supreme Council for Media Regulation (SCMR), which had determined that the platform’s content posed significant risks to minors over “violent content”.
Early Childhood
If nearly half of a player base quits or avoids a game due to toxicity, any plans for growth or monetization are basically dead on arrival. Gamers overwhelmingly believe that the responsibility for cleaning up online spaces lies with the platforms and publishers who run them. If there is a silver lining in all this, itâs that gamers themselves overwhelmingly want change. This speaks volumes about how toxic the average game lobby has become. Our survey reveals clear coping mechanisms players adopt.
Roblox had previously clarified to the Federal Government of SĂŁo Paulo that its monetization model was not abusive and that minors had previously consented to the platform monetizing their content. Meanwhile, in 2024, the Mexico City Cyber Police and the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SCC) also reported that Roblox was being used to promote criminal activity such as the distribution of drugs and illicit substances to minors in the Mexican capital. In the same month, Sarah El HaĂŻry, the High Commissioner for Children (Haute-commissaire Ă l’Enfance), publicly stated that issues such as pedophilia and sexual harassment on the platform were causing concern among French regulators. In January 2026, the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) launched investigations to probe whether the platform was safe in the European Union after multiple reports and lawsuits claiming that the platform was a danger to minors. In February 2026, the Egyptian Supreme Council for Media Regulation passed a statement banning access to Roblox, with concerns being “internet and social media use among children”. In addition, members of Bahrain’s parliament also began drafting a bill to ban Roblox in the country following concerns about child safety.
Understanding In-Game Tools.
Statements like this are important â they set the tone from the top that toxic behavior is not welcome on major platforms. Leading figures in gaming have started to openly acknowledge this responsibility. Players arenât asking for censorship, theyâre asking for safety. For platform owners, this is yet another signal that cleaning up online spaces isnât just a moral duty â itâs necessary to secure the trust of families and the marketâs longevity. The gaming industry has long focused on cultivating the next generation of fans, but toxicity is blocking the on-ramp. If most adults wouldnât let their kids into your online ecosystem, youâre seeding a future audience problem.
The days of a hands-off approach (âwe just make the game, players can police themselvesâ) are over â if they ever truly existed. This phenomenon is echoed in industry-wide research, which states that 7 out of 10 gamers have avoided playing at least one game due to the gameâs toxic reputation or community. This means a game studio could literally lose half of its female players due to an unsafe environment. Many gamers adapt by muting voice chats, avoiding random matchmaking, or playing only with friends. In other words, abuse has become expected â even ânormalâ â in many game communities, a status quo that poses serious consequences for players and the industry. As the Anti-Defamation League grimly noted, ânormalized harassment and desensitization to hate frame the realityâ of online gaming today.
The kids arenât alright
Since 1998, NCMEC has operated the CyberTipline, a place where the public and electronic service providers can report suspected online and offline child sexual exploitation. On the same day, Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird filed a lawsuit against Roblox Corporation for allegedly failing to protect children from exploitation. On November 6, 2025, Texas attorney general Ken Paxton filed a lawsuit against the Roblox Corporation, alleging that the company misleadingly promoted its platform as a safe environment for children.
Harassment is normal in gaming (and players are fed up)
Of course, implementing this kind of system isnât plug-and-play. âA safer user experience leads to more enjoyment, stronger communities, and ultimately, more engagement and revenue,â he adds. Apostolos explains that smarter workflows, automated and tiered by severity, allow platforms to respond faster and more fairly. AI can also adapt to evolving language, subcultures, and slang much better than rule-based systems.â However, words and isolated features arenât enough if enforcement is inconsistent or a companyâs stance isnât communicated to the player base.
The millions of reports made each year uniquely situate NCMEC to identify trends and create prevention resources to address the evolving needs of kids and teens online. On February 17, 2026, Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr launched an investigation into Roblox following instances and reports of child exploitation. Uthmeier also sought communications to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and reports of abuse to and from Florida users among cubet other things via the subpoena.
First, ethically, itâs alarming that online games often have teen or even âEveryoneâ ratings â environments where children face such hostility. The kinds of slurs, sexual comments, and hate imagery that proliferate in some games are absolutely not what most parents want their kids to witness or endure. Recent studies show that three-quarters of teens and pre-teens (ages 10â17) experienced harassment in online games, a sharp rise from the previous year. When even seasoned adult gamers are wary of exposing children to the standard multiplayer experience, itâs a damning indictment of the status quo. We surveyed 2,000 gamers in the United States to understand how toxicity impacts online multiplayer games. As they get older, introduce more interactive games gradually, always with parental controls enabled to manage content, communication, and time spent gaming.
Turkey would ban the platform in August 2024 citing concerns that the content on the platform enabled child abuse. During the same period, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Oman banned access to the platform in the sultanate after multiple reports of inappropriate content being distributed by Roblox to minors. Authorities in the city of Surabaya also imposed local bans on Roblox in primary and secondary schools, citing multiple incidents where sexual predators had harassed minors through the platform, following requests from the local Ministry of Education.
For younger children, opt for games that don’t require online interaction with others. Playing the game with them or watching gameplay videos together can also give you a clear idea of its content and help you decide if it’s a good fit for their age and maturity level. Research the games they want to play, checking ratings, and reading content descriptions provided on platforms like the ESRB or PEGI.
A common criticism in regard to child safety on Roblox is the proliferation of games that depict sex clubs (usually termed “condo games” or “scented cons”) that facilitate virtual sexual roleplay between users and how easily accessible they are to underage players. In September 2025, Algerian authorities banned the game, citing that the company did not have sufficient tools and capacity to protect children, where the vast majority of Algerian users were under the age of 10 and were being exposed to sexual harassment and inappropriate content on the platform. The ESRBâs primary mission is to help parents make informed decisions about the video games and apps their children play. Video game rating systems are designed to help players and parents make informed decisions about the games they choose for themselves or their children. While some communities place age limits to prevent users from joining, applications obtained by Rolling Stone for players to “work” in adjacent sexual games on the platform showed that the large majority of users in these communities were under 15. The appropriate age for online gaming varies by child and game content, but generally, most experts suggest waiting until around age 7-8 for limited, supervised online play.
